Aretha Franklin Leads Montreal Jazz Festival Lineup

Montreal International Jazz Festival

You could be forgiven for forgetting that in 1980 12,000 people taking in jazz in Montreal, was if not novel, at least somewhat unexpected. Come 2008, the 29th Montreal International Jazz Festival is expected to attract over 2 million visitors, 500 performers, 100 venues and 12 days, and somewhere amongst this orgy of toe-tapping, finger-snapping jazz mavericks will be none other than the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.

Leonard Cohen and Aretha Franklin

From the 26th of June to July 6, beatniks, rastas, yippies and nu-ravers alike will descend on Montreal taking in what is widely regarding as the Jazz Festival to end all Jazz Festivals.

The Monkey knows not all our Quebec bound guests are familiar with where to get tickets, which artist are playing, which songs they’re famous for or even what they look like. But hey that’s what we’re here for.

Enjoy the Monkey’s guide to the festivities.

The second most honored Female singer in Grammy history, Aretha has not only won twenty Grammy Awards including the Living Legend and Lifetime Achievement awards, but is now, as she will always be, renowned as the Queen of Soul.

If by some fluke of nature you are not aware of sheer unadaulturated genius of Ms Franklin, you could do worse that starting right here.

Playing the Metropolis July 2nd

One of the few bands to escape the early noughties Electroclash backlash (Fisherspooner anyone?) Ladytron is an electronic pop band originally from Liverpool, England, that have taken robotic, detached vocals and 80’s synth further than the Pet Shop Boys could ever have imagined.

If somehow you missed the ubiquitous club anthem ‘Seventeen‘ and return to form ‘Destroy Everything You Touch‘ cower not my unfashionable friend, you can blag it here care of the Monkey.

2008 Juno Award Nominees from Montreal, Quebec

Arcade Fire Chromeo Patrick Watson

Montreal bands have proved once again that when it comes to producing great music you needn’t leave the island. Arcade Fire and Patrick Watson lead the way with nominations in the dubiously titled ‘ Alternative Album of the Year‘ category Chromeo bust it out with their gay for miles funk, and er…other notable Quebec originators Avril Lavinge and Celine Dion illustrate you dont have to be innovative to be a recipient.

The 2008 Juno Awards on Sunday, April 6th, marks the 37th celebration of the best of best of Canadian music by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) and will broadcast from Calgary Alberta on CTV.

Below is the list of Quebec’s 2008 Juno Award nominees:

Arcade Fire capped of a successful 2007 with nods for Group of the Year and Alternative Album of the year for Neon Bible. If you have been listening to Nickleback for the entire noughties it’s not too late to save your ever living soul by checking out the cathartic Barrack-Obama-Supporting Montrealer’s ethereal pop orchestrations

It’s also been a great year for fellow Polaris Award nominees Patrick Watson who’s Close to Paradise LP will duke in out with their more esteemed compatriots in the Alternative Album of the Year category. If you’re late to the party for these navel-gazers it’s well worth checking out

More 80’s than Paula Abdul, urban-funksters Chromeo unleashed the biggest blackest bass line in all of 2008, and non-unexpectedly, Fancy Footwork has been nominated for the Dance Recording of the Year accolade.

Other Quebecois nominees included:

Amon Tobin Foley Room for Instrumental Album of the Year, sample his haunting drum n’ bass infused Back From Space mp3

Skratch Bastid for Jack Richardson Producer of the Year, but his own stuff is worth a look see too The Dirty Dirty mp3

Corneille The Birth of Cornelius for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year

And you will be happy to note that such cultural luminaries as Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne and Claude Dubois will slug it out for you trifling affections, 3 Quebecois enter the cage – one dubious reputation exits. Celebrate as the Juno Fan Choice Awards reflect your innermost self-loathing.
